Looking for themes for your distance learning classes this fall? Here are ten of my favorite fall learning themes that can be adapted easily for engaging learning!
- Back to School - No, for most of us we are not going back to our physical buildings, but we are going back to learning. Think of all about me activities that can include the entire family. Use social stories to talk about why we are staying home a bit longer in age-appropriate terms.
- Farms - Encourage families to get outside safely by touring local farms. Upload virtual field trips to farms.
- Apples - This one is an obvious choice, but the possibilities are endless and there are so many ideas and freebies available for this theme. Check out my apple themed math and language activities!
- Pumpkins - This is always a fun theme for when October comes around. The nice thing about pumpkin activities, is that you can choose to incorporate Halloween or not and still enjoy the theme!
- Leaves - Yes, this is another obvious choice but who can resist using those beautiful fall colors in art projects, and for dressing up core learning activities? Have your students spend some time outside gathering leaves to show each other during Zoom meetings.
- Fall Flowers - Learn about the beautiful flowers that are in bloom during the fall like mums, asters, and sedum.
- Trees - Children are paying close attention to the trees as the leaves put on their fall showcase of color. Take the opportunity to explore tress from around the world. Have your students share pictures of trees that are near there homes during Zoom meetings.
- Fall Animals - Young learners love animal themes at any time of the year, but the fall is a perfect time to learn about squirrels, owls, spiders, or bats. Units about spiders or bats can be a part of a Halloween theme, or just stand alone.
- Colors - I like to start the school year off talking about primary colors, and then add secondary colors in October. Think about color mixing, the color wheel, and artists who make interesting choices with color.
- Sunflowers - This is my absolute favorite early fall theme because it hasn't been overdone and it still adds a touch of summer warmth to the curriculum. Take a look at my Sunflower Counting Presentation for distance learning meetings!
